She was born 2 years after the War of Northern Aggression and in the middle of the long, hard period called Reconstruction. The President of the United States was Andrew Johnson, followed by Ulysses S. Grant. She lived during the Industrial Revolution although she and her husband would live on a farm throughout their lives.
Mary Catherine “Kate” Boone married William Cornelius Burleson (aka William Cornelius Burleyson, Neal Burleson) on 4/22/1888 in Stanly County, NC. William Cornelius Burleson was born 8/3/1868 in Stanly County, NC to Wesley and Sarah Burleyson. William Cornelius and Mary Catherine Burleson would live through the First World War in which one son served, Jonah Richardson Burleson. The roaring Twenties, and the Great Depression. Mary Catherine Boone Burleyson would also live through the Second World War. They went from horse and buggies to cars; from a rural aggrarian society to cotton mills and manufacturing companies; from nothing to silent movies to talkies to the great movie era and radios followed by television. After thousands of years of doing the same things the same way, suddenly the world was changing, technology and science were progressing. They saw more changes in their lifetime than their parents or previous ancestors ever had.
They had 10 children:
1) Arthur Burleson (DOB 9/7/1889 in Stanly County, NC; DOD 9/27/1889 in Stanly County, NC; Buried in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church,17236 Frog Pond Rd, Oakboro, Stanly County, NC.
2) John Quincy Burleson (aka John Quincy Burleyson) (DOB 6/17/1891 in Stanly County, NC; DOD 4/21/1945 in 212 Ward St., High Point, Guilford County, NC; buried Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 17236 Frog Pond Rd, Oakboro, Stanly County, NC) married Carrie Starnes (DOB 4/20/1900 in NC; DOD 2/23/1986 in High Point, Guilford County, NC). They had 5 children that I’m aware of: Joseph Millard Burleson married Ora Buchanan, Irene Burleson, Tempie Burleson, Vera B. Burleson, Wilma Jean Burleson.
3) Jonah Richardson Burleson (aka Jonah Richardson Burleyson, Jonah Richard Burleson, Jonah Richard Burleyson) (DOB 3/24/1893 in Stanly County, NC; DOD 7/24/1963 in Wadesboro, Anson County, NC; buried Fairview Memorial Cemetery Park, 1416 East Main Street, Albemarle, Stanly County, NC) married Mary Elizabeth Howard (DOB 9/7/1897 in NC; DOD 9/7/1982 in Stanly County, NC). He was a WWI veteran. They had 3 children that I’m aware of: Ruby Burleson, Richard Nelson Burleson, Ethel Burleson (aka Ruby Burleyson, Richard Nelson Burleyson, Ethel Burleyson).
4) Cromer F. Burleson (DOB 12/6/1894 in Stanly County, NC; DOD 5/29/1933 in ? ; buried Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 17236 Frog Pond Rd, Oakboro, Stanly County, NC) married ? . I was not able to find Cromer F. Burleyson after the 1920 U.S. Census. He should have been in the 1930 census but I didn’t find him. I also did not find his death records. I found a photo of his gravestone which is where I got the date of death and where he was buried.
5) Annie Belle Burleson (aka Annie Belle Burleyson, Anna Belle Burleson, Anna Belle Burleyson) (DOB 10/27/1896 in Stanly County, NC; DOD 12/16/1984 in High Point, Guilford County, NC) married A.P. Carrier (DOB ? in ? ; DOD ? in ? ). I could not find a source for her husband. They had 2 children: Claude Carrier married Helen Unknown and Sanford Carrier (aka Stanford Carrier) married ? .
6) Macon Alexander Burleson (aka Macon Alexander Burleyson) (DOB 12/6/1898 in Stanly County, NC; DOD 12/1971 in Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland; buried ? ) married Stella Hunt (DOB 1/27/1913 in ? ; DOD 1/14/1995 in Thomasville, Davidson County, NC). I’m not positive that this Stella Burleson was Macon Alexander Burleson‘s wife. If anyone can refute or confirm this, please contact me at Mom25dogs@gmail.com.
7) Birtie Mae Burleson (aka Bertie Burleson, Birtie Mae Burleyson, Bertie Mae Burleyson) (DOB About 1900 in Stanly County, NC; DOD ? in ? ; buried ? ) married ? . Possibly Charles H. Noble from New York.

10) Claude Flay Burleson (aka Claude Flay Burleyson, Flave Burleson, Flave Burleyson) (DOB About 1908 in Stanly County, NC; DOD ? in ? ; buried ? ) married ? .

There was a family scandal in 1931 when Jonah Richardson Burleson‘s son, Richard Nelson Burleson, shot and killed his Uncle Luther Martin Burleson. It seems Jonah, Luther and 13 year old Nelson Burleson were loading and driving a load of hay. At some point Luther and young Nelson got in an argument about a watermelon. Uncle Luther whipped Nelson. Nelson leaves and goes to a friend’s house and tells him about the argument and whipping and Nelson told his friend he was going to kill his Uncle Luther. As they were driving the load of hay, the gun went off and shot Luther in the head. Jonah reported it as an accident saying his son accidentally knocked the gun over and it went off hitting Luther in the head. But then Nelson‘s friend came forward with what Nelson had told him. Nelson must have been convicted of murder because I found him serving time in the 1940 U.S. Census of the Cabarrus County State Prison Camp.

Attorneys Want Boy’s Trial Moved to Juvenile Court
Albemarle, Dec 4 – (AP) Attorneys for 13 year old Nelson Burleson who is charged with killing his uncle after a quarrel over a watermelon October 24 today moved to reopen the case.
They cited the defendant’s age and argued the case should be remanded to juvenile court. The board was bound to Superior Court Monday when probably cause was found in Stanly County recorder’s court.
Albert Eudy, a witness at the arraignment, said Nelson came to his house a short while before the shooting and said his Uncle, Luther Burleson, whipped him after a quarrel over a watermelon. Eudy reported Nelson said he was going to shoot the man.
Luther Burleson was shot to death as he and his nephew, with Jonah Burleson – Nelson‘s father – were riding on a load of hay near here.

According to the 1940 U.S. Census, the court had worked slowly enough for Nelson to attend a couple of years of high school and get married.
It’s hard to imagine how this must have effected the entire family. Did they take sides, was there a rift, did they stick together?
Tragedy hits again when Cromer F. Burleson died on 5/29/1933. I was unable to find any death records so I don’t know why he died at the fairly young age of 38 yrs old.
William Cornelius Burleson died on 1/10/1935 in Stanly County, NC. He was buried at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 17236 Frog Pond Rd, Oakboro, Stanly County, NC along with their first child, the infant son, Arthur Burleson, and his murdered son, Luther Martin Burleson.

Mary Catherine Boon Burleson died on 5/29/1950 in Stanly County, NC. She is buried at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 17236 Frog Pond Rd, Oakboro, Stanly County, NC. I could not find her death records but she and her husband are on Findagrave.com.
The tragedies weren’t over. Jonah Richardson Burleson was still living in Stanly County, NC and, at the age of 70, he was still working as a produce salesman. He was driving his produce truck when he had a collision with another truck and died from the accident of head trauma. He is not buried at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church but at Fairview Memorial Cemetery Park,1416 East Main Street, Albemarle, Stanly County, NC.

Seven years later, Jonah‘s son, Richard Nelson Burleson, the one who committed avunculicide, died in another tragic accident. He was only 52 yrs old when a rock pile fell on him. He lived for 5 days but died of kidney and liver failure, shock, blood loss, fractured pelvis, ruptured bladder and collapsed lung. The death certificate doesn’t indicate that this happened on the job. Wonder what happened?

***A pneumothorax (noo-mo-THOR-acks) is a collapsed lung. Pneumothorax occurs when air leaks into the space between your lungs and chest wall. This air pushes on the outside of your lung and makes it collapse. In most cases, only a portion of the lung collapses. A pneumothorax can be caused by a blunt or penetrating chest injury, certain medical procedures involving your lungs or damage from underlying lung disease.
He was buried in the same cemetery as his father, Fairview Memorial Cemetery Park,1416 East Main Street, Albemarle, Stanly County, NC.
I could not find any other records of his wife, Inez Leonard Burleson or any children they may have had. I don’t know if this means she remarried or what? If you have any further information about this family, please contact me at Mama.to.dogs@gmail.com.
What happened to the other siblings? This family was difficult to follow. It seems they didn’t always fill out forms, if you know what I mean. I couldn’t find death certificates or death records, military draft registrations, or marriage records and didn’t find them in all the censuses. I tried all my tricks on Ancestry.com and Google searches but was unable to fill in the missing pieces. But here is what I have found on the siblings:

Luther Burleson was shot to death as he and his nephew, with Jonah Burleson – Nelson’s father – were riding on a load of hay near here.
