About Me

My photo
I’m a Christian, first and foremost. It is the first description I can give of myself. Next I was blessed with a wonderful family. I had wonderful parents and we were raised in a Christian family with lots of love. I have 2 younger sisters and their children are like my own. Now they have grown up and have children of their own and they are like our grandchildren. My father was a TVA Engineer when I was born and we lived all over Tennessee my first 8 yrs of life but then we moved to upstate SC and have been here ever since. One of my interests is genealogy and I’ve been blessed that both my husband’s family and my family have lived around us within a 300 mile radius for hundreds of years which makes it easier. My husband and I have been married for over 44 years. He still works but is close to retirement. I’m disabled. I spend a lot of time on my interests and I use my blog to document my projects much like a scrapbook.

According to the censuses, this is the Daniel and Hannah Banes family:
1) A. Bane (DOB: About 1818 in SC) married Charlotte Unknown (DOB: About 1810 in SC) and they had a daughter named Louisa J. Bane (DOB: About 1848 in SC). I haven’t found anything else about A. Bain or his family at this time.

2) Joseph Bane (DOB: About 1822 in SC). I don’t know any more about Joseph Bain at this time.

3) Malinda Bane (DOB: About 1825 in SC). I don’t know any more about Malinda Bain at this time. She may never have married because she was 45 yrs old in the last census she appears and living with her father and sister, Mary.

4) Mary Bane (DOB: About 1828 in SC). She was called Polly Bane. I don’t know any more about Mary Bain (Polly Bain) at this time. After her father died, she is found in the 1880 census at 50 yrs old in Spartanburg as a cook. After that, nothing.

5) Lydia A. Bane (DOB: 1838-1842 in SC). She may or may not be a daughter of Daniel and Hannah Bain. In the 1850 Census, there is a “Lucy A. Bane” living in their household along with Joseph, Mary and Malinda. Lucy A. Bane was born about 1837. In the 1860 census Daniel Bain has Lydia Bain and her first 2 children (Elisha and Martha J. Bain) living with him and her DOB was 1838. Did Joseph marry Lydia and then die before the 1860 census? In the 1850 census, Lucy (and Lydia) was only 13 yrs old but she is much younger than the other siblings. Was she a late baby of Daniel and Hannah‘s? Or was Lucy A. Bain really Lydia A. Bain? Was Joseph Bane Lydia‘s brother or husband? It’s possible that Joseph married a Lydia A. Unknown and they had 2 children between 1850-1860. But I think that Lydia and Lucy are the same and that Lydia is a daughter of Daniel and Hannah Bane. Their dates of birth are the same. This would mean that all 3 of her children were illegitimate. Elisha and Martha J. Bain were the first two and her 3rd child, Elizabeth Bain, was born in 1869 (well after Joseph Bain was out of the picture). Elizabeth is called by her mother’s last name so Lydia wasn’t married between censuses only to lose a husband before the 1870 census. I’m pretty certain that Elizabeth Bain was illegitimate. Lydia‘s living alone with all three children doing “farm labor” work even though her father is still alive and 2 of his daughters are living with him. Is it possible that she was his black sheep daughter and with the advent of a 3rd illegitimate daughter, he put her out? Or was she married to Joseph Bain and had 2 of his children, but when she wound up pregnant with a 3rd child, obviously not Joseph‘s, did Daniel kick her out? Of course, she may have made the move away from Daniel on her own volition because who knows what the true story of the family dynamics were. Worst case scenario would be incest and her 3 children were Daniel‘s children and she finally got away. Best case scenario is that Joseph Bain was her husband and the father of the first 2 children and she and the children lived with Daniel until Elizabeth Bane was born.

Who was Daniel Bane and where did he come from? Who were his parents? Who was Hannah and who were her parents? What happened to all their children? When and where did they die? Where are they all buried? So many missing pieces here and that drives me crazy!

Genealogy - Elisha Bain and Mary Ellen Bogan

…Mary “Mollie” Cynthia Bain, who married Franklin Drayton Prince and they had a son
……Julian Rhett Prince, who married Clara Marie Wilder and they had a daughter named
………Peggy who is Stan‘s mother

Elisha Bain

Elisha Bain (DOB: 4/1858 in Fairforest area of Spartanburg County, SC; DOD: 2/2/1949 in Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, SC) was the son of possibly Joseph Bain (DOB about 1822 in SC; DOD: ? in ? ) and Lydia A. (DOB 1838-1842 in South Carolina, DOD: After 1880 in Spartanburg County, SC). Joseph Bain was missing by 1860 so I assume he died before then. ? It’s also possible that Lydia was a Bain and was Joseph‘s sister NOT his wife. If so, then her 3 children were illegitimate.

(It is very legible and is definitely “Lucy A. Bane” but I think this may be Lydia instead of Lucy. In the following 1860 census you see Lydia Bain living with Daniel and Hannah with 2 of her 3 children. Her DOB matches the 1850 Lucy. In the 1880 Census, she is living with her son, Elisha Bain and her name is “Lydia A. Bain” which matches “Lucy A. Bain“. Lydia could have been married to their son, Joseph Bane and he may have died by 1860 as I can’t find him again. But she could also have been their daughter and her children were illegitimate. And, since, her 3rd child was named Elizabeth J. Bain and was born in 1869 must have been illegitimate, it make sense to me that Lydia was a daughter of Daniel and Hannah Bane and her children were illegitimate. If this is true, then we will never know who their father was.)
