Ambrose, and his wife, Jane, lived in the Big Lick community of Stanly County, NC. He was a blacksmith and a farmer. He taught his son, William Eli Huneycutt the trade as he was also a blacksmith and farmer. He and Jane Elizabeth were married in 1859 and had their first child in 1861. This child was 15 mos old when Ambrose was inducted into the C.S.A army. He did not volunteer and when he didn’t show up at the appointed time, the army sent a contingent of men on horseback to round him up. When Ambrose Ervin saw the soldiers coming he headed for the woods and Janie, with her baby in her arms, picked up a rock and threw it at the Lieutenant that was in charge, hitting him in the nose, breaking it. He didn’t feel that the War of Northern Aggression was his war as he did not own any slaves and he knew his wife and son needed him at home. But he was forced to fight and endured the hardship for his country. He was conscripted on 2/2/1863 in C.S.A. NC 35th Infantry Regiment, Co. I, Private, and was captured near Petersburg, VA on 3/25/1865 and taken to Point Lookout, Maryland and released 6/2/1865 (the War was over in April and, yet, the prisoners weren’t released until June). He was only a prisoner for 3 mos and yet it was at a time when approximately 23,000 Southern men were being held there at a compound that was only about 20 acres. There were few blankets for the men so they had to rotate using it. The black guards took pleasure in mistreating the men and this made a deep affect on my great great Grandfather. When they were released he, along with 23,000 other prisoners, had to make it back home. He may have walked to Washington, DC and then took a train to Salisbury, NC. His wife and a friend took a 2 horse carriage to Salisbury to pick him up. His War records note that, at 29 yrs old, he was 5′ 7 1/2″ tall and dark brown hair with hazel eyes and he was illiterate.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) placed a bronze Civil War Confederate Cross on Ambrose‘s grave in 2002.
